Refractive errors, such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism or presbyopia, refractive surgery is a method for correcting or improving your vision. There are various surgical procedures for correcting or adjusting your eye's focusing ability by reshaping the cornea, or clear, round dome at the front of your eye. Other procedures involve implanting a lens inside your eye. The most widely performed type of refractive surgery is LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), where a laser is used to reshape the cornea.

 

PRK

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a procedure used to reduce the need for corrective eyewear by reshaping the cornea of the eye with a laser, thereby changing the way the eye focuses light. An excimer laser is used to remove a thin layer of the cornea, changing the cornea's focusing power.

 

LASEK

LASEK Eye Surgery (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) is a variation on the techniques for PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) and LASIK. Also, E-LASIK or just plain LASEK is ideally used for people with corneas that are too thin or too flat for traditional LASIK. 

 

LASIK

LASIK method is based on the principle of opening the cornea as a flap by cutting a thin layer on the upper surface of the cornea, and the diopter correction with "excimer laser" on the exposed cornea surface. Surgeries are performed by doctors specialized in the treatment of eye diseases with laser. LASIK procedures are performed with laser devices which have been approved by the FDA (American Food and Drug Administration).

 

Excimer Laser treatment for refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism has been recognized in the medical community as a reliable method with known rules and results. 

 

Cataract Surgery

Cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, an area that is normally clear. The lens works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina, where an image is recorded. As we age, proteins that make up the lens can break down and clump together, creating a cloudiness that affects the clarity of vision. A clouded lens is a cataract. In its early stages, a cataract often has little effect on vision. However, the cataract may grow less transparent over time, increasing the cloudiness of the lens and making it harder to see. The most common technique used in cataract surgery is Phacoemulsification - in which the eye's internal lens is emulsified with an ultrasonic handpiece and aspirated from the eye. Aspirated fluids are replaced with irrigation of balanced salt solution to maintain the anterior chamber.

 

Corneal Transplant Surgery - Keratoplasty

A cornea transplant is a surgical procedure to replace part of your cornea with corneal tissue from a donor. Your cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface of your eye that accounts for a large part of your eye's focusing power. A cornea transplant can restore vision, reduce pain and improve the appearance of a damaged or diseased cornea.

 

Vitrectomy and Vitreoretinal Eye Surgery

Vitreoretinal eye surgery includes a group of procedures performed deep inside the eye's interior with lasers or conventional surgical instruments. This delicate surgery takes place where the gel-like vitreous and light-sensitive membrane (retina) are found. Various vitreoretinal surgical and laser approaches can restore, preserve and enhance vision for many eye conditions such as certain types of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic vitreous hemorrhage, macular hole, a detached retina, epiretinal membrane and CMV retinitis.
